The future goal of ETC Assistant


At the 14th National Transport Technology and Equipment Exhibition on May 28th (hereinafter referred to as “Transport Exhibition”), the “ETC Assistant” stated that at present, ETC assistants have already completed cooperation with Guizhou and launched the “ETC Assistant” applet. With the help of the card business, the "ETC assistant" applet has completed the business layout of "four provinces and one city" in Beijing, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shandong and Guizhou provinces. The current business connection with Jilin, Jiangxi, Guangxi, and other provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions also marks that its business coverage area is rapidly spreading across the country.


Just like the product name, the "ETC assistant" that was formally launched at the end of 2017 has positioned itself as a booster in China's high-speed traffic sector. Based on the long-term planning of the national transportation sector for ETC, “ETC Assistant” has assigned itself to a blue-market market with 100 million users.

At the 2018 Tencent “Cloud + Future” summit held recently, Tencent’s board chairman Ma Huateng’s remarks on the development of the combination of traditional and digital industries attracted attention. Ma believes that in the process of transforming traditional industries with digital and information technology, the operators of various industries are truly digital entities. In this process, the role of Internet companies is defined as "enablement," but Ma said that empowerment is too hegemonic, and Internet companies define "assistants" as more appropriate.


As a product closely associated with Tencent, the positioning of “ETC Assistant” is highly consistent with Ma’s philosophy. As early as in the R&D stage, the product received the guidance from the Ministry of Transport's Road Network Monitoring and Emergency Disposal Center, which fully restored the standard scenes of WeChat social and road network center national ETC online issuance. Many functions were designed to address the difficulties of the current ETC. With regard to pain points, and fully taking into account the future connection with ETC operators in all provinces across the country.


Some senior practitioners in the ETC industry believe that compared with some high-speed traffic solutions designed solely on the basis of mobile payment terminals, ETC still has significant technical advantages in terms of success rate of marking, passing time and path restoration. For the climate impact, vehicle identification, toll station network conditions, security and other aspects of anti-interference ability is very strong. Considering the huge user base that the ETC system has accumulated at present, the digitalization and upgrade of the mobile payment direction based on the existing ETC system are far more efficient than redesigning the new system. Based on this idea of solving the problem, ETC assistants can also rely on existing ETC systems to quickly expand the map.


Thousands of Targets Supported by Half a Million Markets

According to the “2017 ETC Networking Operational Annual Report” newly released by the Ministry of Transport and Road Network Center, by the end of 2017, the total number of ETC users nationwide has reached 60.469 million people, accounting for about 30% of the car ownership, which represents an increase from 2016 to 34%. The total number of users is obtained when the national expressway ETC lane only accounts for 23% of the total number of lanes. The growth rate of ETC-only lanes is about 24%. Compared to this huge market, ETC assistants have set a goal of reaching 10 million users by the end of 2018, which has greatly expanded and exerted space.


In areas where services have already been opened, users can use the ETC Assistant WeChat applet to apply for and use ETCs in the corresponding provinces and regions. The three characteristics of “farewell waiting in line, easy online processing”, “uploading picture data without manual filling out”, “binding WeChat payment, and paying after payment first” make it difficult to recharge and invoice in past ETC businesses. "High-speed traffic queuing payment" and many other pain points have been resolved on the "ETC assistant" channel. "ETC Assistant" has become an important entrance to increase ETC penetration while improving user experience and efficiency.


In addition, the future “ETC Assistant” will build an automotive ecosystem open platform around the auto payment scene and connect with eco partners. In the parking, insurance, auto restaurants, gas stations, auto finance, intelligent hardware and other fields fully open, and collaborative innovation with partners to provide users with better products and services.
