Why Each Layer Of RFID Label Is Critical

Why Each Layer Of RFID Label Is Critical

The bottom layer is the release liner or backing. This layer has to work in conjunction with the bottom adhesive layer for the appropriate amount of adhesion to ensure the labels remain on the liner, but do not tear when peeling away. The bottom adhesive layer is generally engineered to the application of the intended use of the label. Since this is the adhesive that will keep the label on the tagged object, it is critical that it is strong enough to withstand real world environments, but is still able to be easily peeled from the release liner.

On top of the adhesive is the RFID inlay. The inlay is actually comprised of several parts as well. The bottom layer of the inlay is the substrate which will hold the antenna and integrated circuit. The antenna is made of coiled conductive metal which interacts with the antenna and reader to transmit the data held on the integrated circuit. The integrated circuit (sometimes abbreviated as ‘IC’ or referred to as the “chip”) is what actually contains the stored data. Finally is the top substrate which, when adhered forms the protective covering for the chip and antenna. This grouping of materials is referred to as the inlay.

The next layer is an additional adhesive that overcoats the top of the inlay.

The next layer is the top adhesive known as the face material. The purpose of this paper-like material is to hold the receiver coat on which the printer will transfer the image (in the case where labels are being printed on-demand) as well as to seal in the RFID inlay. The receiver coat may also have a top coating that is gloss or matte finished depending on application needs.

The end result is a ‘sandwich’ containing adhesives, topcoats, and an RFID inlay that are meticulously engineered to ensure survival and functionality in the intended environment. While there is a lot that goes into an RFID label, it is important to remember that the RFID label itself is one piece of an overall RFID system and solution. This is why it is important to work with an experienced solutions provider to ensure that you achieve maximum ROI on your RFID investment.
